When the new "Star Wars" sequels were first announced back in November, Conan O'Brien did a popular skit showing what a Wes Anderson-directed Han Solo-Chewbacca buddy movie would be like.
People laughed at the mere idea of the twee, oh-so-precious auteur applying his deadpan sensibilities to a galaxy far far away, but in a new awards season interview with Deadline even Anderson himself admits his version of "Star Wars Episode VII: Revenge of the Preppies" might be too clever for its own good.
"Well, I have a feeling I would probably ultimately get replaced on the film because I don't know if I have all the right action chops," Anderson admits. "But at least I know the characters from the old films. I don't think I would do a terrible job at a Han Solo backstory. I could do that pretty well. But maybe that would be better as a short."
For the record, we are totally down for a short tie-in movie where Harrison Ford sits his three Jedi prodigies down at the dinner table: "The Princess has asked me to leave and I must respect her position on the matter. Maybe I wasn't as true to her as I could have been…"
The interview question is not totally out-of-the-blue, as the "Moonrise Kingdom" director admitted on the "Rushmore" commentary to having put on a stage version of "Star Wars" in second grade. How very Max Fischer-like!
